Embracing the Second Start: A Journey of Personal and Professional Growth

Embracing the Second Start A Journey of Personal and Professional Growth

As a 48-year-old woman, mother of two, psychologist, avid traveller, and photographer, my journey has been anything but conventional. With a strong sense of ethics and accountability, I have always strived to maintain high standards in both my personal and professional life. My career began with a Master’s degree in Computer Science, leading to multiple fulfilling roles across the globe in various sectors, until I decided to take a break to raise my children. Returning to the workforce as the CEO of a shared services company has been a transformative experience, enriching both my personal and professional life in ways I could never have imagined.

The Professional Rebirth

Taking a break from my career to focus on my family was a decision rooted in love and responsibility. However, the transition back to the professional world was not without its challenges. Stepping into the role of CEO required me to harness my skills, experience, and the wisdom gained during my time away. This second start has been instrumental in shaping my leadership style, emphasizing empathy, resilience, and a deep understanding of work-life balance.

Drawing inspiration from renowned figures like Indra Nooyi, former CEO of PepsiCo, who balanced her demanding career with her role as a mother, I realized that my journey was not unique. Nooyi’s emphasis on the importance of family and her ability to lead with compassion resonated deeply with me. Similarly, the teachings of ancient Indian scriptures, such as the Bhagavad Gita, highlight the significance of duty (dharma) and the pursuit of one’s true calling, regardless of the stage of life. These references have reinforced my belief that a second start can be a powerful catalyst for personal and professional growth.

Personal Growth and Fulfilment

Returning to work has not only reignited my passion for my profession but also enriched my personal life. The skills I honed as a psychologist, such as active listening and empathy, have been invaluable in my role as a CEO. These qualities have enabled me to build strong, ethical relationships with my team, fostering a culture of accountability and mutual respect.

Moreover, my experiences as a traveller and photographer have taught me the importance of perspective and creativity. These attributes have translated into innovative problem-solving and a broader vision for my company. Balancing my professional responsibilities with my personal interests has been challenging, but it has also been incredibly rewarding.

Achieving Work-Life Balance

Maintaining a balance between work and life is crucial for sustained success and well-being. Here are some strategies that have helped me achieve this balance:

  1. Prioritization: Identifying and focusing on what truly matters, both at work and at home, has been essential. This involves setting clear boundaries and being present in the moment.
  2. Delegation: Trusting my team and delegating tasks has allowed me to manage my workload effectively, ensuring that I have time for my family and personal interests.
  3. Self-Care: Taking time for self-care, whether through travel, photography, or simply unwinding with a good book, has been vital for maintaining my mental and emotional health.
  4. Flexibility: Embracing flexibility in my schedule has enabled me to adapt to the demands of both my professional and personal life, ensuring that neither is neglected.
It’s Never Too Late

My journey has taught me that it is never too late to restart, start afresh, or even take a break. Life is a series of phases, each offering unique opportunities for growth and fulfilment. Whether you are considering a second start in your career or seeking to balance your professional and personal life, remember that every step you take is a step towards a richer, more meaningful existence. Embrace the journey, and let your experiences shape you into the best version of yourself.
